SAFETY AT THE WATER
In the Acquaint 2006 ( Issue 30) members will have read the comments made by Bill Green (secretary of the Bournville RY & PBC) following the tragic death of one of their members whilst sailing. Bill’s comments reflect their concerns following this incident with a view to establish what can be done to ensure that anyone attending the club, whether sailing or otherwise and then suffering an illness or accident can receive medical attention as quickly as possible.
This incident has therefore generated this page to remind everyone that there is an issue with safety that we should remember whilst at Charnwood Water.

Here is a list of items that we should recognise and be aware of.

1.) Never sail alone, if you are first at the water do not start sailing until someone else arrives.

2.) Anyone sailing should have a mobile phone with them preferably switched on and if preferred on silent mode. If an accident occurs and you don’t have a serviceable mobile phone go to one of the houses and asked to use their telephone.

3.) A list of members telephone numbers will be circulated so please ensure you have a copy when you sail. This is to ensure that you can ring next of kin in case of an accident.

4.) If there is an accident ring (999) the emergency services, tell them what has happened and request the appropriate service. Remember the venue is Charnwood Water off Tuckers Road Loughborough.

5.) As a reminder anyone using the rescue boat must always wear a lifebelt.

6.) All club officers will have a key to the boathouse for access to the boat, buoys, marks and if needs be shelter. A blanket will be provisioned in the boathouse for anyone suffering from cold after immersion in the lake.

7.) There is a lifebelt close to our launching platform so use it if necessary if anyone falls in the water.

8.) If you start to feel ill whilst at the water tell someone your exact symptoms and then decide what action to take. Do not keep it to yourself and perhaps then suffer the consequences.

9.) All members should be observant of other members and communicate if there are any signs of concern.

10.) If you feel ill tell someone so they can help. If you are taking some form of medication also tell people so that in any further event people are aware and can take the appropriate action.
